Edward S. Cheng, vice-chair and partner in the firm’s Litigation Department and co-chair of the Professional Liability, Business Litigation, and Construction Law Practice Groups, was quoted in Massachusetts Lawyers Weekly article entitled, “Suspension spells swan song for combative Boston lawyer.”

But Edward S. Cheng, who represents attorneys in disciplinary proceedings before the BBO, points out that the First Amendment argument only goes so far.

“All lawyers are court officers, and a legal proceeding has to function procedurally simply in order to get through it,” says Cheng, who practices at Sherin & Lodgen in Boston. “What [Hines’] decision said is that [Wilson] was disrupting the proceedings in a way that was inappropriate.”

Part of the problem with Wilson’s statements is that they were impugning the integrity of judges and shaking the public’s confidence in the judicial system being impartial and fair, Cheng says.

Also working against Wilson: his long history of run-ins with judges, Cheng says.
