Brian J. MacDonough, chair of the firm’s Employment Department, was quoted in Boston Business Journal on July 15, 2024. The article, “Many questions still unanswered after settlement with Uber and Lyft,” details what the settlement means for drivers, other app-based workers, and Massachusetts’ independent contractor law.

“It’s one of those resolutions that both sides will claim it as a victory,” MacDonough said. “There’s significant, meaningful, paying increase and benefit protection for drivers, right? For Uber and Lyft, it considerably dropped their risk profile moving forward.”

MacDonough agreed that the settlement isn’t likely to be the end of the story.

“Do I think that there will likely be future litigation in and around the ride-share organizations and the Wage Act? Yeah, I think there’s still going to be open issues there,” MacDonough said.
