Sherin and Lodgen attorney Thomas F. Maffei named to Massachusetts Lawyers Weekly’s “Hall of Fame”
Sherin and Lodgen is pleased to announce that senior counsel Thomas F. Maffei was selected as a Massachusetts Lawyers Weekly 2024 “Hall of Fame” honoree for his contributions to the development of law, contributions to the bar, and efforts to improve the quality and administration of justice in Massachusetts. Tom and fellow honorees will be honored at an awards ceremony at the Venezia Restaurant Boston on September 17.
Tom is an experienced trial lawyer with over 50 years of experience in civil litigation, including legal malpractice cases, bar disciplinary matters, business litigation cases and insurance defense and coverage matters. Tom is also an experienced mediator and arbitrator. He frequently is appointed to serve as a discovery master in complex cases and has testified as an expert witness on legal ethics and malpractice liability issues. Tom has taught Professional Responsibility at Boston College Law School for many years.
Currently, Tom is a Fellow of the American College of Trial Lawyers and a past member of the ACTL’s State Committee; he is on the panel of arbitrators of the American Arbitration Association, and was a longtime Trustee of Massachusetts Continuing Legal Education, Inc. He is a member of the American Bar Association. He is also a past President of the Massachusetts Bar Association and a Life Fellow and former Trustee of the Massachusetts Bar Foundation.
Throughout his long career, Tom has devoted countless hours to enhancing the quality of the legal profession in Massachusetts and improving the administration of justice. He was appointed by the Supreme Judicial Court to serve as a member of the Massachusetts Board of Bar Overseers. He also served as a member of the Supreme Judicial Court’s Committee on the Selection of Bar Counsel, the Chief Justice’s Commission on The Future of The Courts and served as Co-Chair on the Task Force on Quality of Justice. He also served as Vice-Chair of the Committee on Professional Responsibility of the Massachusetts Bar Association and Chair of the Committee on Unauthorized Practice of Law. He is a past board member of the Flashner Judicial Institute.
Tom is the recipient of the 2024 Best Lawyers in America “Lawyer of the Year” distinction in Arbitration and has been ranked in multiple categories annually since 2012, including Commercial Litigation, Ethics and Professional Responsibility Law, Legal Malpractice Law – Defendants, Product Liability Litigation – Defendants, and Professional Malpractice Law – Defendants. He has also been annually ranked as a Top 100 New England Super Lawyer.
An active participant in his community, Tom is a former member of the City of Melrose Park Commission, former Chair of the Committee to Study Municipal Salaries and Melrose Charter Advisory Committee, a former Board Member of the Melrose YMCA and past President of the Mt. Hood Park Association. He is also a former president of the Boston Latin School Association. He has participated in the Food Pantry distribution program at St. Anthony’s Chapel in downtown Boston and was a tutor at Cristo Rey Boston, a tuition-free high school for Boston students from low income families. He currently serves as chair of the Arisdine Krikorian and Family Foundation, a private foundation that provides scholarships to Armenian students attending colleges and universities in the Greater Boston area.
