Thomas F. Maffei named “Lawyer of the Year” for Professional Malpractice Law by Best Lawyers in America 2025

Thomas F. Maffei was named a “Lawyer of the Year” for his work in Professional Malpractice Law by The Best Lawyers® in America 2025. The “Lawyer of the Year” designation recognizes individual lawyers who have received the highest overall peer-feedback for a specific practice area and geographic region. According to Best Lawyers, only one lawyer is recognized for each specialty and location, making this accolade particularly significant.

Tom was also listed in the 31st edition of Best Lawyers for his exemplary work in Arbitration, Commercial Litigation, Ethics and Professional Responsibility Law, Legal Malpractice Law – Defendants; Product Liability Litigation – Defendants; and Professional Malpractice Law – Defendants. In addition to Maffei, 20 other Sherin and Lodgen attorneys were selected for inclusion in Best Lawyers, with two being named to the “Ones to Watch” category.

An experienced trial lawyer in the firm’s Litigation Department with over 50 years of experience in civil litigation, his experience includes legal malpractice cases, bar disciplinary matters, business litigation cases and insurance defense and coverage matters. Tom is also an experienced mediator and arbitrator. He frequently is appointed to serve as a discovery master in complex cases and has testified as an expert witness on legal ethics and malpractice liability issues.

Tom has taught Professional Responsibility at Boston College Law School for many years. He has also lectured and written extensively on a variety of legal topics concerning litigation, trial practice, professional ethics and lawyer discipline issues. He is a Fellow of the American College of Trial lawyers, a Panel Member for the American Arbitration Association and is listed in the Top 100 New England Super Lawyers and The Best Lawyers in America.
